My project explores this interweaving dynamic between urban anonymity, Surveillance technologies and safety, using geometrical aggregational elements to weave in layers of public and private into Blackfriars Station. Seeking to resolve the in-between, as anonymity and safety are defined as two separate potentially opposite characteristics, can architecture start to blur and resolve the boundaries, creating a mutualistic conversation between the two.
The design process progressed as an evolution from a hybrid system model, which included the exploration of overlapping string grids, using a field of density to form nodes. This evolved into an interest in the building’s mathematical geometry and grids, forming an analysis of circular geometry and platonic solids. These elements were vastly explored and tested to use as modules for the design. Using their angles, symmetrical capabilities, and intersection with each other to create a gradient of spaces devoted to either safety, surveillance or privacy and anonymity.
Questioning how this threshold between the positives of surveillance, to the importance of urban anonymity can be weaved together. encouraging circulation and watchability to deter criminal acts, but also, to propose a calm and peaceful space for everyone to enjoy activities unaccompanied by the presence of fear, creating a safe programmatic system in a city tainted by crime.
