As the home of cultural innovators, Somerset House connects creativity and the arts with wider society. It combines worlds and minds to intensify creativity and multiply opportunity, simultaneously driving artistic and social innovation. Today, as host to the UK’s largest creative community working globally across art, technology, business, and social enterprise, it continually draws fresh ideas and new talent. At the heart of Somerset House, the home of cultural innovators, up to 70 artist residents. The Somerset House Artist Studio develops ambitious cross-disciplinary projects and creative collaborations on various scales.
My project aims to intervene in the unused and existing exhibition areas and develop a new performative space for Somerset House resident artists by tailoring the performative spaces directly to the artist’s needs through the different spatial, lighting conditions and space topography that suit each type of performative art
The goal of this project is not only to create additional performative space for Somerset House but also to reconnect the unused area, introduce new circulation to Somerset House as well and create a better relationship and experience for both the performer and the audience by using the hybrid system which is the deployable structure.
The hybrid system aims to explore the potential of frame and joint that can be deployed when rotating or applying force in a certain direction and use the system as a form-finding tool.
