The project envisions a transformative redevelopment of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, introducing an elevated public plaza on top of the building. This new design aims to create a vibrant nexus for the community, offering a fresh perspective of London and increased public space. In the face of declining museum attendance in the past decade and the ensuing challenges faced by cultural institutions, this architectural proposition seeks to forge a dynamic and engaging connection that resonates with London’s diverse visitor demographic.
At the heart of this design is the implementation of a hyperbolic paraboloid structure, chosen for its dual benefits of structural efficiency and aesthetic allure.
This design aims to transcend the conventional to evolve into a tangible structure that not only provides a public component within the museum landscape but also to enhance dynamic circulation throughout. The initiative further endeavors to expand the museum’s boundaries, thereby increasing gallery spaces, and introducing a public elevated urban plaza that welcomes the London community into a new realm of engagement and interaction.
