The project is situated in the City of London’s Smithfield Market, fish market area. The location is characterized by a dense population, high vehicular traffic, and significant noise pollution, with ambient noise levels around 74 dB, surpassing the WHO’s recommended standard of 55 dB. Local residents have expressed a desire for a tranquil public space to alleviate fatigue and relax.
In the project, architecture functions as a filtering medium, mitigating noise pollution and alleviating the oppressive atmosphere of dense urban environments. The design serves a dual purpose: during the day, it acts as a role escaping the urban noise, filtering and shaping auditory experiences, while at night, it reintegrates sound into the urban fabric by transforming into a nightclub. By creating a landscape, it blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, thereby inviting individuals into the building.
At night, the building’s role shifts to a sound nightclub, where DJs blend urban soundscapes with street noise, broadcasting it onto the streets as part of a ‘city stage,’ attracting passersby to engage with the space.
