If we no longer rely on books, what does a modern library need to be? MEMORY_MANAGEMENT reimagines the British Library as a library for digital knowledge. The 2023 ransomware attack showed that the library has no infrastructure to store the digital material it is legally required to preserve, while its physical collection has outgrown the site and now sits 200 miles away in Boston Spa. The project removes the books and converts the King’s Library tower into a tower of server racks, placing the infrastructure of digital knowledge behind the same glass that once displayed the printed page. A system of telescopic cubic modules replaces the redundant reading rooms with new spaces that can be rearranged as the needs of a digital library change.
