Knowledge is shaped by bias through the emphasis of some facts and the understatement of others. Designed as a monument to knowledge, human experience, and the public realm, the British Library reflects architect Colin St John Wilson’s vision of a national knowledge centre. Yet the design emphasizes the King’s Library as the building’s spiritual core while understating the monumental experience. It also emphasizes the experiences of long-term visitors while understating those of short-term visitors through uneven engagement with key spaces. By addressing these biases, this project aims to reinforce the library’s identity as a monument to knowledge while enhancing the human experience and public realm.
